Maui Island Plan Available for Review

January 8, 2010

The Maui Island Plan can now be reviewed online at tinyurl.com/maui-island-plan. The County Council Planning Committee convened in the Wailuku-Kahului Plan Area on December 14 in the Council Chamber but has yet to meet in the other five community plan areas on Maui.

The purpose of the meetings, of course, is for the Department of Planning to make presentations and discuss the potential impacts of the plan on these community plan areas. According to the committee, testimony will be accepted but no legislative action will be taken.

The deadline to enact the Maui Island Plan is on October 18 this year. A significant bit of information about it is that this plan will establish growth boundaries for the first time. According to council member Kaho’ohalahala, it’s one of the most important documents to be considered by the Council this term.

The Council encourages public participation. If you area  Maui resident, you can voice your opinions on various issues related to this plan. If you are interested in doing so, it is recommended that you click the above link and study it before you testify in front of the Planning Committee. It’s up to all of us to help decide where and how the island should grow in future decades.

When/where are the meetings? On January 11 the Planning Committee will meet at the Lahaina Civic Center to discuss the West Maui Community Plan Area. Next, they will meet in Paia-Haiku Plan Area on January 19 at the Haiku Community Center. For Makawao-Pukalani-Kula they will be at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center on the 20th and then at the Kihei Community Center for Kihei-Makena on the 25th. All these meetings take place at 6p.m.
