Maui Real Estate Sales in Kihei

The recent buzz is that Hawaii has received $912,713 in federal funds to support projects and programs to promote nutrition, physical activity and to combat smoking.

This money is, of course, part of the $119 million in stimulus funds that were given to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to funnel into U.S. territories last week. The idea is to support prevention and wellness which makes health care cheaper in the long run. The initiative is called Communities Putting Prevention to Work and is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The money is being distributed to all the states, DC, Puerto Rico and six Pacific territories. An emphasis is going out to supporting healthy choices in schools and communities. The message will be delivered through media which will encourage a healthy diet, more physical activity, etc. Some of the money will also go to quit lines and media campaigns to diminish smoking.

Hawaii has already been named one of the top healthiest states in the country, presumably as a result of more physical activity among residents than we see in other states.
