South Maui Sustainability Meeting

Maui Homes for Sale in Wailea

By Mark Harbison

If you follow the news on Maui, you'll already be aware that South Maui is in the process of a transformation involving long-term and continuous efforts to become more sustainable as a community.

There has been a particularly large push to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This is true for all of Maui, but South Maui has put a special emphasis on that goal. GE's Smart Grid test in the resort community of Wailea is a prime example of the participation that you will see in this part of the island to reach their energy goals.

Progress in this area is a particular point of pride for many South Maui enthusiasts who believe in environmental responsibility. If you aren't particularly concerned with these issues for the benefit of the environment, don't worry, it's not a philanthropic movement. The goal is not just to improve the health of the environment, but also to save money, both for the state, the county, and the individuals involved in reduced fossil fuel dependence.

We're located right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with no one else nearby. This position of extreme geographic isolation presents us with the challenge of living affordably, considering the cost of transporting goods across an ocean. Fortunately, these efforts are bringing us closer and closer to a standard of living which is not only high, but well within reach of our pocket books, despite a wide range in income among our residents.

If you are a South Maui resident or, happily, if you plan to become one, you might sit in on the upcoming talk, Advocacy in Action, which will be held on March 18, between 6:30 and 8p.m. at Kihei Charter School.

Not only will energy needs be discussed, but also on the table will be issues like the benefit of growing our own food, building clean and green infrastructure, strengthening locally owned small businesses, reducing waste and other goals that will shape a healthier future for those who live here.

Now if you're on the hunt for Maui real estate, we recommend a look at new Maui property listings as well as our Maui real estate listings. Wailea golf vistas also include some great buys. If you have any questions or need assistance, you can find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Mahalo for reading this week!
