What does sand have in common with dolphins? Probably nothing, aside from this event!

Unique South Maui Beach Event

By Mark Harbison

One of the reasons why we love South Maui is because of the seemingly endless number of unique and interesting events that are hosted here. We get countless marathons and numerous celebrations, and every so often, we see an especially unusual event. One of these is coming up on Saturday, August 7th: dolphin sand sculpting!

Yep, that's right. The Pacific Whale Foundation, which is located in Maalaea, near Kihei's South end, has organized what they call the 2010 Wild Dolphin Sand Sculpture Contest. It's free and open to all participants. The event will be held on the gorgeous north end of Keawakapu Beach, which is located in south Kihei.

From 9am to 11am, dolphin and sand sculpting enthusiasts will gather to build and show off their unique creations in one of the most scenic places on Maui. Afterward, at 11:45, there will be a judging and prizes will be announced. The categories are: Best Overall Entry by a Family or Group, Best Individual or Group Kids, Most Realistic Dolphin, Most Creative Entry, and Funniest Entry.

As you might have imagined, considering this is a Pacific Whale Foundation event, the prizes will fit the theme. All participants get a free Wild Dolphin Guide and a dolphin poster. Whoever wins Best Overall Entry by a Family or Group will get four passes for their Wild Dolphin Watch Cruise, which goes out to the coast of Lana'i. There will be dolphin-themed prizes from the Pacific Whale Foundation store for the other winners. For information, call Pacific

If you need to know more about this event, call the Pacific Whale Foundation at (808) 249-8811 ext. 1.
