New Maui Flights Via Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines

South Maui Homes in Wailea

By Mark Harbison

New flights to Kahului, Maui have begun via both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Alaska Air has added daily service to and from San Diego, California, and Hawaiian has begun twice-weekly non-stop service to and from Las Vegas.

Alaska Airlines will also debut a Hawaiian-themed menu on flights to Hawaii, and on top of that, for a limited time they had offered up to $250 off a line of their vacation packages, including air transportation, lodging, optional tours and ground transportation. The packages applied to trips with air service between Oahu, Maui Kauai and the Big Island to Oakland, Portland, Seattle and Anchorage. Alaska's growth in the past few years has been very impressive, and they certainly are going out of their way to generate business through creative means.

As for Hawaiian Airlines, their twice weekly service is provided with their 264-seat Boeing 767-300 aircraft. The flights leave Kahului on Mondays and Thursdays at 8am to arrive at McCarran International Airport at 4:35pm. The return flights depart from Las Vegas on Sundays and Wednesdays at 6:25 to arrive in Kahului at 9:25 pm. This will be Hawaiian Airlines's third nonstop flight between Maui and the Mainland added this year. The other two flights ran to and from San Diego and Oakland.

Between Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines, Alaska seems to be much more aggressive in sweetening their air service deals. Perhaps this accounts for their recent rapid expansion. No matter which airline is more successful, the result for travelers is the same: more competitive rates. That's good for our already recovering visitor industry, which has already seen significant gains thanks to the recovering economy and reduced Hawaii vacation costs.
