FEMA Meetings on Maui Flood Insurance Maps

Maui Real Estate

By Mark Harbison

FEMA is planning to present the new Maui flood insurance maps via three meetings on the subject. One will be on Lanai, one on Molokai, and one on Maui. This is a good opportunity to cover your bases.

At the Maui meeting, you'll get important information on flood insurance rate maps within Maui County, which have been developed by FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency). It's a good idea to attend if you want to keep informed and plan for the future. A little care and foresight goes a long way towards living happy, healthy lives no matter where you are.

In that spirit, you are encouraged to attend these meetings, especially if you are a property owner or you are considering the purchase of Maui real estate. You'll get the latest information on how/if the flood map changes will affect you when they become official in the last quarter of 2011. Options for homes within the flood zones will be discussed, of course.

The flood map changes will affect some South Shore Maui properties, as well as those in Hana, and those adjacent to the Kaunakakai and Iao Streams. There will be Federal, State and County personnel available to answer questions and help you determine any possible flood risk to your property and how best to adjust to it.

For those who are boldly planning to develop Maui land in high-risk flood zones, personnel from the Maui County Department of Planning will also be available to answer questions.

The Maui meeting will be held at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center at 395 Waena Place in Wailuku. It will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 8th from 5:30pm-8pm. For a preview of the new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DIRMs), visit the Hawai'i Flood Hazard Assessment Tool website, www.gis.hawaiinfip.org/fhat.
