Rotary Foundation and Red Cross Aid for Japan

South Maui Real Estate

By Mark Harbison

The best time to raise money for relief efforts in the case of natural disasters, like those that devastated Japan, is immediately after they occur and the shock is still fresh on everyone's mind. But people can quickly forget even such incomprehensible tragedies as these, and that is why we are airing this blog two weeks after the 8.9 earthquake that rocked Japan and the colossal tsunami that followed. The relationship between Japan and Hawaii is strong, so our residents won't likely forget as quickly as other places, and we hope that those who can help will do so.

I am the Assistant District Governor for the Island of Maui for Rotary International District 5000 (Hawaii). A week ago we set up a Japan Disaster Relief Fund at our Rotary International District 5000 Foundation to help the earthquake/tsunami victims: District 5000 Foundation, c/o PDG Roy King, 619 Onaha ST. Honolulu, HI, 96816

Rotarians who are not from Hawaii can contribute through this link to the Rotary Foundation website.

If you are not a Rotarian, the organization that is widely considered the most trusted and effective is the American Red Cross. Click the link to go to their donations page. Japan is first on their list of causes you can donate to. Under that listing, they have provided this statement:

"Your gift to the American Red Cross will support our disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters."

(We recommend Rotary and the Red Cross because in addition to the incredibly effective work these organizations do, believe it or not, there are unsavory groups and individuals who are trying to profit from this tragedy, so donating through other channels can be risky.)

While ours is a Maui real estate blog that focuses on our island community, events like these warrant a discussion about places far from our shores. If you are here for assistance with Maui real estate, we would be happy to provide that for you. You'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Thank you for taking the time to read this blog.
