Visit and Restore Haleakala Crater

South Maui Condos and Homes

By Mark Harbison

Haleakala National Park is a Maui treasure. How long has it been since you visited, or have you ever visited? If you enjoy the outdoors and camping, and you want to help make a difference for the benefit of future generations and for Haleakala's ecological health, this may be the right activity for you. It would certainly be an interesting break the more popular ways most people spend their time on Maui.

Friends of Haleakala National Park are hosting a service trip to the Crater that will involve a three-night camping stay with tents at Waikau, just above the Ko'olau Gap native forest. Participants will hike in on August 6th and hike out on August 9th. Between those hikes, they will remove invasive species from the landscape to help native vegetation thrive.

Since participants are volunteering, there is no fee to enter the park. You'll get to experience the vivid scenery, rare and unique plant species, and Haleakala's bird life on this fascinating trip.

At 10,023 feet above sea level, Haleakala's summit opens to stunning vistas when the weather is clear, as it typically is in the mornings. Be sure to bring layers and warm clothes to wear and sleep in. It can get extremely cold up there at night. As you may know if you've been here long, Haleakala means "House of the Sun" and as the legend goes, the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its summit. It should come as no surprise that sunrises from the top of the mountain are just stunning.

So if you are interested in participating in this wonderful service trip, you can get more information and make reservations by sending an email to sageblank@aol.com and visit www.fhnp.org, then click on Service Trips.
