Hawaiian Storytelling at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center

Real Estate Maui HawaiiIt is difficult to choose a favorite thing about living in South Maui. Whether you favor the warm climate, the warm water, or the warm culture, it's simpler just to say, "Maui no ka oi," meaning Maui is the best. There is something special about our beloved island, and it's no wonder- it shares the name of a Hawaiian demigod.

On Sunday, January 22, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) will be presenting the Storytelling Festival: Maui, Hina & Ka Hana Kapa. This event will be performed the traditional Hawaiian way, in dance, chant and the art of storytelling. Hawaiian myths and legends are beautifully complex and intricately woven tales of shape-shifting gods and goddesses and the mortal Hawaiians who came in contact with them. The stories themselves can enrich one's knowledge of our islands, educate us to the meanings of the names of many familiar locations, and remind us of the beauty and wisdom that is the core of Hawaiian culture.

This particularly famous legend will follow the demigod, Maui, as he cleverly catches the sun to slow its journey in the sky so that his mother Hina's kapa (bark cloth) could dry.

The presentation is being performed by Pa'u O Hi'iaka, under the direction of Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt.

This event is free of charge, so if you plan on being in Kahului on the 22nd, this may be a fun and enriching way to spend part of your afternoon. The 45 minute show begins at 3:00pm at The Pa.

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center has brought us stunning events and concerts since 1994. For more information on this event, call 242-7469 or visit www.mauiarts.org. The MACC is located in Kahului, between the UH Maui College campus and Keopuolani Park, on One Cameron Way.
