Disaster Preparedness Training in South Maui

South Maui Real Estate in Wailea

To buy a Maui home is a significant investment, not only of your money, but also your time and well being. That's why it's so crucial to take good care of it and keep it safe. Wherever home owners are, natural disasters are possible. Whether you opt for South Maui real estate or a home on the other side of the country, it's important to learn as much as you can about disaster preparedness in that location.

For this specific purpose, disaster preparedness training is coming to the South Maui area. If you are familiar with this part of the island, then you'll know that it's a coastline community, and that makes certain parts of it vulnerable to tsunami. There are steps you can take to ease your mind about the possibility of an event like this, and also to make recovery easier.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program was created to help people learn how to do just that. They can teach you how to be better prepared to take care of yourself and your family, and how to make the smartest decisions during emergency situations in the community.

Some of the things you can learn from CERT training are fire safety, light search and rescue skills, team organization, and disaster medical operations. That way you can assist professional first responders if an emergency does occur.

The training involves a six-day 30 hour program where you'll get classroom instruction along with field exercises. The program is taught by Maui Fire Department instructors, and will be provided for free under a Homeland Security grant. As long as you're 18 and up, you can take the training, and you don't need any prior experience. Children aged 14-17 can attend, but only with a legal guardian.

If you're interested in taking the training, classes are in the evenings and on Saturdays. The Kihei class session will be held in May at the Kihei Elementary School on:

  • Tuesday the 8th from 6:00-9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday the 10th at 6:00-9:30 p.m.
  • Saturday the 12th at 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday the 15th at 6:00-9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday the 17th at 6:00-9:30 p.m.
  • Saturday the 19th at 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

If you need more information or you want to register, contact Charnan Carroll (Civil Defense Staff Specialist & CERT Program Manager) at 270-7285 or via email at cert@mauicounty.gov. In the meantime, if you need assistance finding South Maui real estate, that's where we can help. You'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page! Mahalo, and be safe!
