Grand Wailea Hotel Expansion

April 20, 2012

As South Maui real estate specialists, we like to keep an eye on all the interesting events and developments in this part of the island so that prospective home owners can get a good sense about what it’s like to live here. Not only is the South Maui community proactive about improving the quality of life, rather than simply maintaining it, but there are also plenty of opportunities for both fun and relaxation.

Even home owners with beautiful ocean views and a close proximity to the beach will often treat themselves to a stay at one of our renown hotels for a little R&R. One of the most luxurious choices is the Grand Wailea. Its ownership history is a long and interesting story, but the current news is even more interesting. The Grand Wailea has recently received a special management area permit and planned development approvals from the Maui Planning Commission that will allow their plan for a 300-room expansion at a $250 million price tag.

This is a major step forward for the resort, and speaks boldly of economic confidence due to Maui’s tourism upswing since the peak of the recession. The hotel recently settled a legal dispute with Maui residents concerning building height and burial site issues. The approvals were granted two weeks later.

According to recent news reports, there will be a new four-story and two-story extension to the Molokini Wing, along with two and three-story wings added to the Lagoon Wing. There will also be a new Wailea Mauka Wing, a new guest wing, and more parking.

If the visitor industry continues its improved performance, these investments should pay off nicely. Another great bonus for the Maui economy will be the construction jobs provided by the project.
