Maui Lecture and Slideshow by Animal Rights Photographer

By Mark Harbison

Jo-Anne McArthur is an accomplished animal rights photographer, and she will be presenting a lecture and slideshow on her work on May 10th in Paia. For anyone within the Maui community who is passionate about the welfare of animals, or simply wants to learn more about them, this event is ideal.

Jo-Anne will present work that illustrates the way animals live alongside people around the world. She has over ten years worth of experience in her field, and her goal is to educate and inspire people everywhere about the right and wrong treatment of animals. Most people have witnessed the mistreatment of animals themselves no matter where they live, and Maui is no exception. There is room for improvement in every community, and social pressure is a big influence. The less acceptable animal mistreatment becomes, the less frequently it will occur.

For those of you who are especially softhearted, don't worry, not all her stories are sad. Many are uplifting and deeply heartwarming tales of beautiful relationships between people and animals. One thing you can be sure of is the thoroughness of her research. She's done her work on all seven continents, and her documentary project, We Animals, is internationally celebrated. She has an impressively long list of awards and distinctions, including the following:

  • 2011 Canadian Empathy Award
  • CBC Top 50 Champions of Change
  • Farm Sanctuary's 2010 "Friend of Farm Animals" award
  • Lemondrop's "Top 10 Women trying to change the world"
  • She is one of 20 activists featured in the book "The Next Eco Warrior"
  • "Shining World Compassion Award" by Supreme Master Ching Hai.

If you'd like to attend, be at the Kaunoa Senior Center at 401 Alakapa Pl., Paia on May 10th at 7p.m. Admission is free to all comers, and so are the refreshments. You don't need to RSVP. For more information contact the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii at 572-8371 or visit www.VSH.org.
