Maui Niu Festival at the Grand Wailea

Wailea Beachfront Property

By Mark Harbison

Looking for an interesting and diverting event to take your mind off your worries? There are always interesting events on Maui, and this one is located at the Grand Wailea Hotel, which is situated on an amazingly beautiful Wailea beachfront property that keeps guests returning year after year. On Saturday, July 21st, the Niu Festival will be in full swing from 10am-3pm.

Niu means coconut, and this will be the first such festival, which is themed "Canoes & Coconuts." The cultural relationship between the coconut and the Polynesian people will be explored and celebrated, with plenty of educational information provided. You'll probably learn a lot of new things, and if you have guests visiting from out of town, they'll probably enjoy the experience as well.

As you might expect, the entertainment will be continuous throughout the event's duration. There will be presentations and hands-on workshops for the creatively inclined, and coconut games for keiki (kids). Appropriately, they'll also have coconut-themed food booths along with Maui artisans who are selling their coconut crafts and products. The Coconut Recipe Contest will attract intrepid cooks from around the island who will surely present a wide variety of creative recipes. The film "Papa Mau, The Wayfinder" will be shown for free, with a Q&A session afterward with the filmmaker Na'alehu Anthony.

The real treat will be the canoe rides. In fact, the Niu Festival proceeds will go to Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, which is the only Maui organization with a traditional double-hull voyaging canoe. You can learn more about them by visiting www.huiowaakaulua.com.

You may be pleased to know that the event is free, so if you feel like experiencing a culturally rich and educational Saturday on July 21st, you might try stopping by and seeing what interests you. If nothing else, the grounds of the Grand Wailea Hotel are worth exploring for their scenic value. There's plenty of that gorgeous South Maui beach to enjoy as well. However you plan to spend your future weekends, we hope you enjoy them! Mahalo!
