Maui’s First Target Store

February 7, 2014

Target has finally expanded to Maui, and the new store will be located in Kahului at Puunene Shopping Center. It will be 140,000 square feet, and they will hire around 200 employees, but it won’t be open until March 2015, if things go according to plan.

This is a positive thing for Maui’s economy. Not only will the island benefit from the 200 new jobs, but it’s a good sign that Target was confident enough in our market to make the investment of putting a store here. The construction project, which has already begun, will involve 250 construction jobs. Also, Maui’s commercial real estate thrives when new businesses open.

For those of our residents who are interested in working there, company officials will be holding job fairs about two months before the store opens. They’ll be hiring not only for their normal retail jobs, but also for the Starbucks and the pharmacy that they will have in the store.

Believe it or not, there are more benefits to the store’s opening. They are going to start a local grant program, contribute to the Aloha United Way, and donate food to a Feeding America member, or approved agency. Any large corporation that supports local causes is nice to hear about.
