South Maui Real Estate

South Maui Real EstateSouth Maui real estate is the last stop on our tour of the island, but we're not quite finished. There are two more islands within Maui County, and they are Molokai and Lanai. You'll learn about those over the next couple of posts. For now, we'll focus on our favorite part of Maui, which includes lively Kihei, luxurious Wailea, and tranquil Makena, all of which share warm and balmy weather with very little rain.

Kihei - This vibrant beach town is like the South Maui answer to West Maui's Lahaina. It's busy, there are lots of interesting things to do, and you'll find plenty of businesses, restaurants and places to shop. While there are certainly fewer art galleries in Kihei than in Lahaina, you get so much more beach. In fact, you'll find miles and miles of stunning white-sand beaches that are ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and tide pool exploration. The challenge is picking your favorite, and some are complimented by grassy parks with BBQ grills, restrooms, showers and picnic tables. There's nothing quite like the serene, sparkling blue shorelines of South Maui on a calm, clear morning. For those who enjoy night life, there's food, drink, entertainment, and plenty of fun to be had in Kihei. Real estate in the area includes a mix of residential homes and condos used for both short-term vacation rental and full time residency. Kihei is the closest to Central Maui, so the drive to get to the other areas of Maui is conveniently shorter than Wailea and Makena.

Wailea - As you make your way south past Kihei, you'll find yourself in Wailea, where luxury real estate, sprawling golf courses and extravagant hotels provide elegant focal points throughout the less crowded landscape. Towering trees lend pleasant shade along your drive, and you'll discover that the beaches here are tucked back and hidden from the road. Visit any one of these gems and you'll find that the scenery they offer is stunning, especially during sunset. The Shops at Wailea provide upscale boutique shopping, and there are several fine dining options scattered throughout the area. This tropical getaway provides a lifestyle that often feels as much like a vacation to its residents as its visitors. The world-class golf courses, soothing spas and resort living has made Wailea real estate highly sought after.

Makena - After passing through elegant Wailea, you will find Makena, where a select few ultra luxury homes are tucked into the rugged landscape, framed by the stark black lava flows that came down from Haleakala in ages past. Here, you'll find fewer sand beaches and more rocky little coves. Beneath the sparkling azure surface are some of the most vibrant reefs that you'll find anywhere on Maui. This tranquil but rocky coast gives corals endless places to anchor themselves, unlike the few rock outcroppings that break up the beaches of Wailea and Kihei. That's why the water is teeming with vibrant fish, crustaceans, and other marine life. The beauty of this rare shoreline landscape can be seen most starkly in the contrast of its jagged black rocks against the liquid blue softness of the ocean.

As always, we're happy to assist you with your Maui real estate search if you need us. We hope we've given you a solid introduction to South Maui, and what to expect from the lifestyle in this beautiful part of the island. Mahalo, and don't forget to check in for our upcoming posts on Lanai and Molokai!

One of Maui's best qualities is the variability of its landscapes. No two places are alike. If balmy beach towns and remote rainforests aren't to your taste, what about a soothing pastoral setting on the slopes of Mt. Haleakala? The temperatures cool substantially as you make your… Continue Reading
