The turnout for the Maui Energy Conference last week was just over 350 people. This is the highest level of attendance yet, in its four year history. Given Maui's position as a focal point in the development and application of renewable energy technologies, it was a natural choice for the conference location. In all likelihood, this gathering of energy industry professionals is going to continue to grow in future years. That's something to keep in mind if lower energy costs are a priority in your Hawaii home search.
Held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, the conference began last week Wednesday, and concluded on Thursday. At the tail end on Friday, there was an optional sustainability workshop at the Maui Research and Technology Park, which is located here in South Maui where new energy saving and renewable technologies are often implemented.
This year's conference covered a wide variety of topics, after being dominated in prior years by the proposed NextEra Inc. acquisition of Hawaii's utilities. This time, the focus covered the security of water, food and energy, Hawaii's energy policies, developing a healthy energy economy, and sustainable energy sources, among many other topics.
According to the organizers, the attendance of this conference has been growing steadily since its inception. This is exciting for those in the energy business, and for those who want to have cutting edge sustainable technologies, like Maui real estate owners. Let's not forget the Mayor's Office of Economic Development and the Maui Economic Development Board, both of which combined forces to spearhead the conference. The Hawaii state government plans to have the state on 100% renewable energy by 2045, and although it's definitely a work in progress, about 26% of Maui's energy came from renewable sources in 2015.
