If you are looking for a good cause to join this fall, then why not participate in the 10th Annual Paddle for Life here on Maui.
Come October 6th and 7th, paddlers and ocean enthusiasts alike will gather at the Hanakaoo Beach Park, located at Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina, at 12 p.m. to celebrate this decades-long event in honor of those who have overcome one of life’s greatest difficulties. Every year more than 200 cancer survivors and their supporters participate in this journey, where they cross the wide-open ocean to conquer the mentally, physically and emotionally challenging 34-mile round trip race to raise funds for the Pacific Cancer Foundation.
Participating teams travel across the ‘Au’au channel from Lahaina to Lanai and make memories to last a lifetime. Last year, each paddler was required to raise at least $200 before joining in on the fun.
If you are planning on attending, expect to have an incredible bonding experience. The race starts with an opening ceremony followed by a paddle towards Manele Bay in Lanai. Upon arrival, participants will camp and then have a celebratory dinner. The following morning and after a peaceful night’s sleep, everyone will have breakfast and then paddle back towards Lahaina for a commemorative lunch on the beach. What a day!
According to last year’s Paddle For Life, more than half of the paddlers are cancer survivors and everyone else is in one way or another connected to the cause. This is sure to be a heartfelt experience for any and all good samaritans. Last year’s event raised $175,000 that went towards helping the Pacific Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide access, knowledge, and support to all those affected by cancer in the Maui County community. The nonprofit was founded in 2005 by a group of healthcare professionals and cancer survivors.
