Watch out Maui because another film festival is right around the corner! This September film lovers may gather in numbers to participate and celebrate Hawaii’s acclaimed short film festival and it is stopping on Maui!
On September 21, 2018, from 6 pm until 9:30, the film festival will be featuring at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in the McCoy Theater. Since 1999, the ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase has been Hawaii’s most popular and largest short film festival that highlights local talent and original work by students and aspiring filmmakers as well as professionals. Entries can come from all over the world but the festival requires that there must be a creative relationship to the Hawaiian Islands in some respect in order to enter.
This year interested parties can apply by submitting a short film screenplay or a web series pilot (12 pages maximum) to info@ohina.org along with a resume and a one-page letter explaining why you want to be considered as an ‘Ohina fellow. Applications must have been submitted by July 15th and winners will be notified by August 10th.
But that’s not all! On Saturday, Sept. 8th, a select few filmmakers will get to develop screenplays and learn from this year’s special guest Dana Ledoux Miller from The Newsroom. On Sunday, Sept. 9th, filmmakers will pitch their scripts to the ‘Ohina Executive Team and winners will receive special awards and a chance to have their film produced and highlighted in next year’s festival. This year’s festival will showcase Kalewa, a new short film that you can watch here.
