28th Annual Ki Hoalu Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival

Maui is home to a variety of talented musicians who come to the island to share their work and aloha with anyone who wants to listen. Lucky for us, there will be a chance to see some of these musicians in action this summer during the 28th annual Ki Ho’alu Guitar Festival.

On Sunday, June 23rd from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. there will be a slack key guitar festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Ki Ho’alu, which translates in Hawaiian to “loosen the key” celebrates this particular style of music that dates back to the 19th-century paniolo era. During that time, slack key was played around the campfire after a day of manual labor and began a tradition on the island that is still practiced today. Now known as the world’s greatest acoustic guitar methods and has even become recognized as its own category at the Grammy Awards!

This annual music festival has been bringing together some of the top Hawaiian slack key guitar performers in Hawaii year after year and continues to be a popular event for music lovers all over. Located at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Maui, you can enjoy the sweet sounds of the guitar from the beauty and comfort of an open lawn area. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, or lauhala mats to sit back and relax and enjoy the show. All ages are welcome, and guests should know that crafts and merchants will be on site with plenty of local goods for purchase as well as food trucks where you can find some tasty grinds. And the best part is the show is free! So unlike other festivals, you won’t have to spend a lot of money (or any for that matter) to attend. Check it out this summer, and we’ll see you on the lawn.
