If you ask anyone who has ever traveled to Hawaii where to find the best beaches, they are sure to mention Maui. The Valley Isle is known for its miles and miles of pristine coastlines, which is especially so on the island’s south shore. Here’s our list of the top five beaches in South Maui.
1. Big Beach
Just as the name implies, Maui’s famous Big Beach is huge and is more than a half a mile long! This area is frequented by tourists and locals alike and has stunning views of the Pacific, Molokini Crater and more. You will feel like you’ve come across the beach of your dreams here. Just be careful when there’s high surf. Big Beach has a pretty incredible on-shore break that tests the abilities of even the most seasoned swimmers.
2. Wailea Beach
Conveniently located right next to the Grand Wailea Resort, Wailea Beach is easy to access and it has open parking making this an ideal spot to lounge in the sun. While the beach is frequented by many guests of the nearby resorts, there’s plenty of space on the white sands to enjoy for all. One of the best aspects of this beach is its easy entry into the water, making it perfect for children as well as adults. You might also consider renting a kayak and taking it for a ride on the open ocean!
3. Mokapu Beach
Known for the peaceful vibe and scenic views, Mokapu Beach is located in the front of the beautiful Andaz Wailea Hotel and means “sacred island” in Hawaiian. In the past, there used to be an islet right offshore but that area was destroyed during World War II combat training. Regardless, there’s still plenty of shade and sandy beach to enjoy today. Parking is available at Ulua Beach or the nearby Keawakapu Beach, so be ready to enjoy a sandy stroll!
4. Makena Landing
As a favorite amongst the locals, Makena Landing is located in the Makena area and is somewhat secluded. There are bathrooms and showers nearby making it a great place to throw a get-together or to bring the family. While the beach is not large, it’s what’s in the water that will have you excited. This area is used by snorkelers and scuba divers daily who enjoy exploring the abundant sea life in South Maui. You’re sure to see some turtles and maybe even some he’e (octopus). (Also, make sure to check out our Makena listings today).
5. Chang’s Beach
Yet another local favorite and is often uncrowded, Chang’s Beach is home to some great snorkeling and diving spots along with surfing and bodyboarding.
