Maui Nonprofits Given Large Donation from Charitable Trust

December 30, 2016

If you want to live and work in a place where generous folks pour a great deal of support into the community as a whole, you’ll have a hard time finding a better option than Maui, (especially if you like beautiful beaches and warm weather all year round). On this island, it can be challenging to find someone who isn’t involved with some kind of charitable effort, from volunteering to donating funds to proactive organizations.

As such, it was exciting to hear that the Dorvin and Betty Leis Charitable Trust announced that it would be donating no less than $1.25 million to 17 of Maui’s wonderful nonprofit organizations. The funds will go a long way to help sustain the important work these organizations do for the health of the community and Maui’s sensitive ecosystem.

The following are the worthy recipient organizations: The Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Maui County Council – Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scout Council of the Pacific, The Hospice Maui, ARC of Maui County, Maui Family YMCA, Maui Hui Malama, Horizons Academy of Maui, Mental Health Association of Hawaii, The Salvation Army, J. Walter Cameron Center, Imua Family Services, Teen Challenge Hawaii, University of Hawaii Foundation, State of Hawaii – Baldwin High School, Easter Seal Society of Hawaii and Ka Lima O Maui.

As you may have noticed, many of these organizations work to benefit children and education, which is no coincidence. Dorvin and Betty Leis established the trust back in 1989 after moving to Maui in 1972. Dorvin subsequently founded one of Hawaii’s biggest mechanical contractors and became the father to six children. Over the years, he grew to appreciate the efforts of their devoted teachers.

Unfortunately, Dorvin passed in 2015, but the distribution of these charitable funds were done in honor of his generosity and his love for Maui, which he considered home. A significant portion of the funds are going to local education, which is inspiring to many families, including some who may be interested in moving to Maui. Dorvin not only loved the island, but created a successful future for himself and his family here, which is a fine example of the kinds of opportunities that can be found on Maui.
