January 18, 2019

Real Estate is booming on Maui and we hope you’re staying up to date about the latest in real estate market trend news by continuing to follow our weekly blog. As always, make sure to check our newest listings and contact us in the event you come across your dream home! We love helping people like yourself into a new home on Maui and can’t wait to hear about what condo or home caught your eye.

While on this blog we often talk about real estate, we also like to focus on places, events, and people that make Maui No Ka Oi (the best). One of our favorite spots on the island just so happens to be the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge and we want to tell you why. Read on to learn more.

This special area is conveniently located at milepost 6 on the Maui Veterans Highway in Kihei. It’s situated right in between Lahaina and Kahului and is an eye-catcher for sure. This large piece of natural wonder just so happens to be home to more than 30 species of birds, including some really unique wildlife such as the migratory waterfowl and the endangered Hawaiian stilt and coot.

Established in the early 1990s, the wildlife refuge covers more than 700 acres between Kihei and Maalaea and includes walking trails and a coastal boardwalk located on the island’s largest lowland wetland. If you haven’t been there yet, then now is the time, as there are a few special events coming up for the next few months.

Currently, there are guided bird walks at the pond on Tuesdays starting at 9 a.m. This exclusive and limited event gives visitors and islanders alike a chance to learn about the refuge and the birds that inhabit the area. Also, until March of this year, the area will be open the third Saturday of every month with family-friendly activities. The boardwalk nearby is open seven days a week from sunrise until 7 p.m., and current refuge hours are 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Visitor center hours are Monday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Take advantage of the limited special events so you can gain a better understanding of one of Maui’s most majestic natural wonders and learn all about what makes the Kealia Pond so incredible. We hope to see you at one of the third Saturday events and hear from you soon about real estate on Maui. Have a great week everyone and a hui hou!
