Making Maui Safer with Street Light Upgrades

March 15, 2019

In terms of places to live in the world, Maui is darn near perfect. The views of the ocean and surrounding islands, the whales, the rolling countryside, tall mountains, waterfalls in Hana and so much more make Maui one of the best places to call home. But just like anywhere else, there’s always room for improvement. And that’s why we are happy to hear that Maui County officials have been proactive in making our island safer by upgrading our street lights.

The Department of Public Works in partnership with Maui Electric Company (MECO) is currently in the process of installing close to 5,000 new energy-saving street lights throughout the island of Maui. This project focuses on replacing the current high-pressure sodium light bulbs with LED street light fixtures. LED are considered to be one of the most energy-efficient types of lighting as it uses a fraction of power compared to other types of lights. In addition, they also have a longer expected lifespan, which will reduce the need for long-term maintenance on Maui’s streetlights.

The first phase of the project calls for around 1,889 fixtures servicing the roadways of parts of East, West, and Central Maui with portions of this upgrade already completed. The second phase of the installation includes approximately 2,931 fixtures and is scheduled to start in early 2019 and wrap up towards the end of the year. During that period the county-funded streetlights of Upcountry, South Maui real estate, and other parts of the west side can expect to be working with minimal impacts to traffic though pedestrians on sidewalks might see some detours. MECO also expects that the electrical service to each affected area will go uninterrupted.
