Hawaii Conservation Program Sets Aside 750 Acres

By Mark Harbison

Hawaii is viewed by most as a tropical paradise, and that's what it is. But that's not all it is. Our lovely little island chain is is a treasure trove of unique culture, history and natural resources. The term "natural resources" doesn't do justice to the ecology of Hawaii. This island chain has more endangered species and has lost a higher percentage of its endemic species than any other U.S. state. For that reason, it is crucial that we protect those remaining.

The Hawaiian Department of Land and Natural Resources' Legacy Land Conservation Program is doing just that. Their goal is to preserve Hawaii's most sensitive natural resources as well as cultural and historical sites. The program is giving a large portion of the money needed to purchase 750 acres that hold a special part of our Hawaiian heritage for future generations.

The Legacy Land Conservation Program is giving $3.3 million for this purpose. According to the DLNR, each dollar given by the state will be matched with $3 in federal, private and county funds for a grand total of $9.5 million.

The Legacy Land Conservation Program is relatively young, having only been established in 2005. It provides grants to local organizations and agencies working to purchase and protect valuable Hawaiian land. The sites being purchased in this particular effort are located on Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island.
